Vaginal Infections – Tips On Pleasant Vagina Smell and Avoiding Infections
A healthy vagina is home to a variety of microscopic organisms. Normally they live harmoniously in an acidic environment that prevents the overproduction of any one species and fights foreign invaders.
Vaginal infections however can cause a change in the smell and other unpleasant side effects.
Here we will look at some common vaginal infections that change the smell of the vagina and give some common sense advice on keeping your vagina healthy.
Vagina infections and the smell of the vagina are affected by lifestyle, diet, weight etc.
Vaginal infections can be prevented and your vagina can have a healthy smell by following the tips below:
1. Diet
Eat a healthy diet cigarettes alcohol and drugs should be cut down, as should heavily spiced foods, junk food and red meat.
Try and eat as naturally as possible and drink lots of water.
2. Cleanliness
Odor-producing bacteria can thrive on the vulva and must be cleaned off to prevent vaginal inflections.
For most women find that washing the genital area daily with a simple, fragrance-free soap keeps them clean and fresh.
Since your vagina essentially self-cleans, douching is unnecessary. In fact, douching upsets the delicate balance between good and bad bacteria in the vaginal ecosystem.
Because infections such as yeasts are found in the intestine, It is important after going to the toilet to wipe front to back vaginal area first, rectum after.
During sex it is very important to avoid contamination of the vagina with organisms from the bowel, or rectum.
3. Clothing
To prevent vaginal infections make sure your clothing “breathes,” avoid tight garments and fabrics containing a high percentage of synthetic fibers.
Keep in mind also that tampons and diaphragms left too long in the vagina can create a very strong unpleasant odour.
4. Use condoms
Finally, if you don’t know your partner well, Use condoms and a spermicide to prevent infections.
Below we have outlined 3 common vaginal infections, their symptoms, causes and treatments:
1. Bacterial vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) accounts for around half of all vagina related health visits.
About half of all women with BV vaginal infections have no obvious symptoms. The most common symptom is a thin, white to grey discharge with an offensive fish like smell.
Because the odour is strongest when the discharge is exposed to an alkaline substance such as soap or semen, it will be at its strongest in the shower / bath, or after sex.
BV is normally treated with antibiotics prescribed by a doctor and a visit is essential if you feel you have it.
2. Yeast Infections
Although yeast infections are probably the most common type of vaginal infection, many women never visit their doctor.
Some simply recover naturally; others treat themselves with anti-fungal vaginal creams available without prescription.
Classic symptoms of yeast infections include:
Vulvar itching, irritation in the area and redness.
If the urinary opening becomes inflamed, urination will probably be more frequent and may be uncomfortable.
If the infection is severe, the vulva will swell and fine breaks, called fissures will form. Vaginal discharge will become thicker and whiter.
Yeast infections are the result of excessive growth of a family of fungi that normally live and in the vagina.
The most common of these infections is vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), which is usually caused by a fungus named Candida albicans.
There are two types of VVC:
Uncomplicated, a mild to moderate infection that responds well to therapy and recurrent Which, is more severe and often occurs in women who have diabetes or are infected with less treatable forms of yeast, such as Candida glabratia.
Recurrent VVC,normaly occurs more than four times a year and needs longer initial treatment about two weeks and follow-up therapy for 6 months or more.
Certain factors are common causes such as nylon and lycra clothing that traps heat and moisture.
Other common causes include: Obesity, pregnancy, diabetes and suppression of the immune system during chronic illnesses, the use of oral contraceptives, and eating large amounts of sugars, starch, and yeasts.
If you do have a yeast vaginal infection, your doctor will ordinarily treat you with either prescription or nonprescription antifungal creams and suppositories referred to earlier.
3. Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis, or “trich,” is a sexually transmitted vaginal infection suffered by millions of women.
While infection with trichomoniasis can be intensely uncomfortable, it is not a serious threat to health.
The symptoms are normally vulvar and vaginal burning and itching. The burning may be most apparent after intercourse.
In addition, there may be vulvar swelling and frequent and uncomfortable urination. There is a heavy vaginal discharge, usually yellowish or green, which may or may not have an offensive odor.
The trichomonad is a minute parasite. It has three tails at its narrow end and swims with them and the white blood cells of the body follow.
These blood cells literally surround a trichomonad and kill it by eating it. Symptoms occur only when the body’s natural defense are swamped by with sheer number of reproducing trichomonads.
Trichomoniasis is usually easily diagnosed by a quick trip to your doctor and antibiotic treatment cures it more than 90 percent of the time.
Finally
The important point is if you have a vaginal infection don’t be embarrassed, visit a health professional, who will give you the necessary treatment and cure the problem.

Suffering from chronic yeast infections. I can’t take it anymore!?
I hope someone out there can help me with a little info. I suffer from chronic yeast infections, have been tested for every STD on earth and HIV, all negative. I only wear cotton undies, don’t use douches or perfumes, and have eliminated sugar from my diet. Also, I don’t wear tight clothing, don’t use soap down there, and haven’t switched laundry soap. Does anyone know of any at home remedies for this? Also, nothing my doctor has prescribed for me has worked. I’ve just started taking L. Acidophilus capsules today. I’d really appreciate any advice. I haven’t been able to have sex with my husband for 5 months now; I’d love to have my normal life back.
Sorry, I shoud’ve mentioned I’m at the doc’s office every 2 weeks or so about this. They always check under the microscope, and it’s always yeast. I’ve had BV twice as a result of treating the yeast infection.
Are they sure that it is a yeast infection? I thought my chronic infections were yeast until the gyn tested me for bacterial vaginosis and what do you know, that is what it was. It isn’t an STD. Check out the website below. But you will have to go on medication for 5-7 days to treat it.
But if it isn’t and just yeast or itchiness my Dr. told me to do a sitz bath with baking soda, it worked that and i swithed my "down there" soap to Dove sensitive skin and I haven’t had a problem since.
But go to you gyn and ask to be tested for BV. It is tested the same way yeast is, under a microscope.
I hope this helped, I know how you are feeling.
Why can’t you have sex with the hubby? Girl, use condoms if you are worried about him getting a yeast infection. The chances are slim for him to get one (unless he still has his foreskin) as long as he wipes/washes off after.
Good luck!!
Saw your additional info on there, I don’t know what it is then. Maybe change doc’s and see if they can find something to help you. I would be disheartened also if I was in the doc’s office every two weeks. You eat/drink a lot of sugary things? I remember my grandma said she used to get them a lot and that they did some kind of procedure and she never got one again. I will have to call her tomorrow and see what it was.
Do You Have Yeast Infection Candida Albicans Symptoms?
The yeast infection Candida, or a similar yeast infection will affect about 3 in 4 women at some stage in their lives.
Even though it is somewhat more common than it was years ago it is a subject, which many women still find very difficult to discuss, leaving many to avoid treatment and put up with the symptoms.
However, this is never a good idea. Although mild symptoms of candida albicans can be just an irritation, chronic candidiasis, which can eventually occur is a serious medical condition, which left unchecked could lead to severe symptoms.
There are many places now especially on the internet where people can get the information they need to understand what candida is, what causes it, the signs and symptoms as well as how it can be treated.
Continue reading to find out how you can join our free newsletter to find out how to naturally combat candida.
It is vitally important that if a woman thinks she is suffering from a yeast infection she talks to her doctor or another health professional.
Through them they will be able to find the best route possible in order to treat this very common but uncomfortable infection.
One of the first things a person will normally need to do in order to combat the effects of Candida is to alter their diet.
In most cases it would be wise if they eliminated both refined sugars and yeast from their diet as well as increase the amount of probiotics (good bacteria) into their digestive system.
It is the good bacteria, along with a fully working immune system that suppresses the Candida from growing and causing the infection.
Should a persons immune system become repressed or they have reduced levels of probiotics in their digestive system this allows the yeast infection (Candida) to begin growing.
There are round about 20 different types of Candida to be found in the human body and the most common of all of these strains is Candida Albicans.
Although this fungi lives quite happily on and inside our bodies the majority of the time it can, under certain conditions, become so plentiful that it will cause an infection.
These infections will normally occur in the moist damp areas of the human body such as in the genital area of women (the vagina), the mouth or between folds of skin, like under the breasts or armpits.
Should candida enter your bloodstream, allowing the spores to infaltrate the body and enter major organs, it can cause serious complications.
Often a repressed immune system is the reason that candida can multiply in the body. This may be due to an illness or through a form of medication that they are taking such as chemotherapy.
Candida can also start to multiply quickly if there are insufficient levels of good bacteria in our digestive system. These good bacteria or probiotics feed off candida, which helps to suppress the numbers and allow the body to keep the upper hand.
This normally occurs because a person has taken antibiotics prescribed by their doctor for an extended period of time. Antibiotics take a broad stance and will often indiscriminately kill any bacteria, including the good ones that are vital for effective digestion.
To combat this it’s often recommended that a probiotic supplement be taken by people on prolonged courses of antibiotics to help keep yeast infection candida albicans in check.

Treatment For Chronic Candidiasis
For sufferers of candidiasis avoidance of carbohydrates is of prime importance. Yeasts ferment fats and proteins poorly, but thrive on carbohydrates, particularly sugars. A rigid abstinence from refined carbohydrates should be observed to prevent Candida increase in the body. The types of foods to avoid are sugars, breads, cakes and pastries etc., mushrooms, aged cheeses, dried fruits and alcoholic beverages. If possible these foods should be discarded completely on a regular basis until the candidiasis is under control. Occasional ingestion does not seem to matter but, when eaten continuously they will feed Candida albicans and constantly aggravate and worsen, a candidiasis condition. The result is ongoing allergy illness.
High protein foods, including fish, seafoods, lean meats, nuts and eggs, should take preference, combined with low carbohydrate vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, broccoli, squash, cauliflower, cucumbers and asparagus. Additional benefits may be gained by restricting cereal grains, as many people will find themselves intolerant to these because of the candidiasis. Obviously, it is not desirable to stay on a protein oriented diet for too long. However, supplementation with plenty of low carbohydrate vegetables does not only help overcome the Candida problem but will also provide an excellent diet for the maintenance of general good health.
It is important for allergy sufferers to remember to test each food before including it in a yeast free diet. Due to the candidiasis, allergies may have already developed to some of the suggested foods such as fish, nuts and eggs.
Antibiotics should not be taken, unless absolutely unavoidable. In particular, the ‘broad-spectrum’ drugs, that destroy the protective bacteria in the intestinal and vaginal tracts, should not be taken over a long term. When this is unavoidable, an antifungal drug, such as nystatin, should also be taken to counteract stimulation of yeast growth by the antibiotic.
Of particular danger is the long-term treatment of acne by the use of tetracycline. This is a common mistake made by skin specialists. One of their standard procedures is to prescribe a broad spectrum antibiotic for months at a time. Whilst this can help acne in the short term, it rarely works long term. The antibiotic causes further increase in the yeast infection which was often the root cause of the acne infection. In other words, like most skin disorders, acne is usually the sign of a deep-seated allergy disorder. Any long-term treatment by antibiotics will breakdown the immune system, promote candidiasis and result in further allergy illness.
Another condition arising from candidiasis, for which antibiotics are commonly prescribed, is urethritis. This is often diagnosed by doctors as the more serious and deeper-seated disease of cystitis of the bladder, because they do not understand candidiasis or its symptoms. As a result, antibiotics may be prescribed for weeks or even months. They do very little good and can actually harm the patient by aggravating the yeast infection which is causing the urethritis.
A further misuse of antibiotics is in their prescription for viral infections. They are not effective for this purpose, yet doctors continue to prescribe them, knowing this to be the case. General practitioners simply cannot grasp, or do not want to grasp, the simple possibility that viruses can cause infections by gaining access to the body through mucous membranes already irritated by allergic reactions to foods and chemicals. Candidiasis is considered a prime cause of this condition and antibiotics will only serve to aggravate the situation further.
Immunosuppressant drugs, such as cortisone and steroids should be avoided as they contribute to the breakdown of the immune system. These drugs will enhance the growth of yeast by their function which is designed to suppress the immune system in order to give relief of symptoms. This is a classic example of treating the symptom and not the cause. In this case the prescription of immunosuppressant drugs is actually harmful because, although in the short term symptoms will be relieved, ultimately the increased growth of yeast caused by suppressing the normal immune mechanisms will result in the deterioration of the patient’s condition. More intolerances and more debilitating symptoms will then occur.

My daughter is 3 years old and has chronic yeast infections. Any advice on what to do or not to do?
I have tried vagisal ( outer areas only) with a layer of hydrocortizone cream. It relieves it temporarily but it come right back.
No, she doesn’t go to a babysitter. I have asked her doctor. Maybe it is time to seek a new dr.
Unfortunately, the vagisal and hydrocortizone cream are only treating the symptoms and not the infection. Only medication can do that and since over the counter treatments are for adult use only, may I suggest calling her pediatrician.
I wouldn’t jump the gun automatically thinking it’s abuse. There are a few things to consider in order to help prevent or reduce the likelihood of more infections.
This time of year (summer), kids spend a lot of time in pools and water activities in tight bathing suits made of synthetic fabrics that don’t allow skin to breathe and air to circulate.
Yeast thrive in moist, warm areas (genital, anal, oral, under arm and skin folds). If she’s spending a lot of time in a wet suit, you may want to think of making sure she dries thoroughly or is out of the suit as soon as she’s done getting wet.
Soaking for a long time in a bubble bath can trigger an infection too. Some soaps can be irritating and if not rinsed well, the residue left behind can causing itchiness and we know what kids do to an itch. They scratch and scratching creates tiny, tiny openings for infection to enter. Consider a bubble bath with oatmeal or chamomile in it. It’s gentle for kids.
Also, make sure after she uses the bathroom, either one or two, that she is clean and dry.
Lastly, diet plays a part too. Our intestinal system naturally has "good" bacteria that helps with digestion and regulation. Dairy products, either too many or too few servings, can effect the flora bacteria levels and cause yeast infections. That’s why yogurt is great in anyone’s diet. It’s nutritional and aids in balancing the flora bacteria we need.
Also, a sugary diet can cause yeast infections as well.
Hope this helps a little. Just some things to think about.

One of the first symptoms is commonly a vaginal discharge that’s thick and white.
The white vaginal discharge is commonly described by women as appearing and feeling like cottage cheese. The vaginal discharge can also appear with a green or yellow looking tint.

Efficient Means Of Candidiasis Treatment
Candidiasis treatment such as Nystatin and Diflucan are some of the antifungal drugs which are commonly used in recovering from disturbing symptoms caused by an infection. The sole purpose of this antifungal therapy is only to eliminate the symptoms and not really kill the fungi causing it. This will serve as the primary stage before going through the medication process of killing yeast or fungi. Using these drugs is also part of diagnosing a person in order to determine the appropriate medicine fit to his condition.
After you have undergone the process of getting away from symptoms, your doctor will then prescribed you some treatments to further get you well from the infection. Some people are continuing the process by using herbal treatments or natural cures which are typically homemade. Always have in mind that once you stop the treatment procedure, fungi will always come back and can even get you to a more severe condition.
Good diet will give you protection when talking about Candidiasis treatment wherein you need to forget eating foods which are high in sugar and carbohydrates. It has been discovered that diet has been a very efficient tool in controlling Candida but once you get off from it, symptoms will come back and infection will occur again. Vitamins and minerals are also great sources of substances that are used for reducing Candida and keep the body from having any infections and even recurring infections. Probiotics are also very good at eradicating any forms of fungi or yeast by providing friendly bacteria all over your gastrointestinal tract. These bacteria will be the ones to fight against bad bacteria causing infections and they will as well balance everything inside the stomach.
Most of the herbal treatments applied by several people are garlic which is known to be the best treatment for infection, water with tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract, and Olive leaf extract. They contain substances that are also present in some antifungal medicines. What makes this more popular to people compared to the use of modern medicines is that you will never get any side-effects when using these because they purely came from nature making them very safe to use at.
There are not many things one must consider knowing in Candidiasis treatment. It usually reaches up to six months when you undergo the treatment process and since there are medicines which are not good when taken for long term consult your doctor and ask a reference on which medicine is best to use. Supplements are always necessary especially those who are suffering Candidiasis for a long period because you tend to lose nutrients in your body making you weaker and more vulnerable to other illnesses.
Always go after the doctors’ instructions in order to keep track with the improvement of the treatment process. This is very important because every time a change might occur, the doctor can right away cope up and provide you even more suitable medications. This might take a long process but as long as it is giving you an assurance of getting well, you should go on with the procedure on using particular Candidiasis treatment .
10 Natural Cures For Yeast Infection
If you are suffering from yeast infection, chances are your doctor would prescribe topical ointments or ingestible tablets from your local drugstore. But these prescription drugs only aggravate this disease by helping spread the yeast-like fungi Candida albicans. Listed below are the ten best cures for yeast infection in the holistic style.
The first cure is prevention via proper hygiene. Yeast infection spreads primarily through carelessness, whether by exposure to a sufferer, to Candida albicans, or to chemicals which trigger yeast infection. Hence, no lending of personal belongings, and dispose expired products properly.
The second cure is living a healthy lifestyle. Minimize drinking alcoholic beverages and tap water. Because stress is a trigger, set aside time for relaxation and sleep.
But what if you did not know these preventive measures? The next cure, then, is to avoid ingesting drugs of any kind. Antibiotics kill the bacteria that monitor the growth of Candida albicans. Other medicines to avoid include birth control medication, immuno-suppressants and steroids.
One effective cure is a strictly regimented diet as determined by your doctor. The standard Candida diet forbids affected individuals from eating the following:
* Sugars, to the point that even fruit may not be allowed;
* Food with high yeast and mold content, like cheeses, dried fruit, melons and peanuts;
* Milk, dairy products, and food with high lactose content (this means that you cannot eat yoghurt, but you can use it to alleviate the effects of yeast infection in other ways).
This diet allows only the following:
* Water;
* Herbal teas;
* All vegetables;
* Sources of protein (meat is allowed, as are fish, poultry and legumes, although soy and soy products are known to have side effects);
* Probiotic supplements;
* Whole grains like millet, brown rice, and oatmeal without sugar;
* If possible, apples, blueberries, cherries, other berries, and pears.
Reading food labels is an absolute must for the cure to take effect. Sticking to this diet even after the symptoms disappear not only boosts immunity, but also curbs the Candida albicans population boom by reintroducing friendly bacteria.
One way to relieve yeast infection is to apply natural antifungal agents like garlic paste, extra-virgin coconut oil and diluted tea tree oil directly on the skin. Grapeseed extract and tannins from tea and condiments fight chronic infections excellently.
Women with vaginal yeast infection may find relief in a few drops of diluted tea tree oil or a dollop of yoghurt. Application should be done at least twice a day through inserting a tampon with either oil or yoghurt into the vagina. This remedy must be continued one day after the symptoms disappear.
Ingesting licorice helps sufferers of endocrine yeast infection by stimulating hormones without causing side effects. This sweet also can counteract the estrogen loss endured by women with vaginal yeast infection through the release of estrogen-like friendly steroids.
Another great cure is taking in electrolyte-heavy drinks. To make your own, squeeze in half a lemon (full of essential minerals) in a glass of filtered water, then add 1/4 teaspoon of Celtic sea salt (with 84 minerals). Drink it six times during the day, with three of those six times during meals.
Cleansing your colon naturally washes out the toxins made by Candida albicans and also makes the digestive system receptive to friendly bacteria. Recipes may vary, but they usually involve a mixture of garlic or garlic extract, cayenne peppers, apple cider or apple cider vinegar, and the spicy oregano oil.
So there you have the ten best cures for yeast infection. Take note that these are not the only cures available, but these are the ones which have been proven to work time and again. Do your research, and you may find one which works best for you. Good luck!
